Abstract

Having as premise the importance of environmental issues in contemporary times, the paper discusses the theme of environmental justice and the importance of its representation within the scope of official statistics on the environment, making an interweaving of issues on environmental justice, information, and international statistics. The starting point are the questions: are Brazil's official statistics on sustainable development under the responsibility of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in line with international statistics developed by UN bodies in charge of environmental justice and related issues? In what way do Brazilian statistics reflect a concern to portray ethical issues at the environmental level, particularly the issue of environmental justice? Such questions translate into the following main objective: to identify to what extent the issue of environmental justice is reflected in environmental indicators of the United Nations and the IBGE. For this, the contents of the classifications adopted in these institutions are investigated, aiming to identify elements that are close to the theme of environmental justice, even if indirectly. It mobilizes, a literature on environmental justice, access, ethics, and use of environmental information, which contextualizes the discussion on the production of information on the environment in Brazilian statistics, vis-à-vis the recommendations and statistical frameworks of the United Nations. The work identified that the classifications focused on here have a more quantitative bias, in such a way that information on environmental justice is not directly contemplated. Even so, environmental classifications and some national products are already moving towards incorporating quality of life and ethical issues linked to environmental justice. In addition, it is possible to derive some ethical issues from the combination of data already available.
