The theoretical framework of a study that aims to trace the main attributes of the role of the librarian in the open access scenario in Latin America is here described, with the further aim of gauging the repercussions of the increasing predominance of the digital landscape on the training and education of these professionals. In a later empirical stage, the aim is to identify the perceptions of librarians - initially in Brazil - both in relation to the required professional attributes for these roles and in their assessment of the relevance of their professional education in preparation for such roles. The premise of the study is that, due to their accumulated know-how in the technical, ethical and legal dimensions of information work, librarians will assume the leadership of projects in the digital repository arena.
