Educating the health information professional: an issue of social responsibility in the Brazilian context

Abstract

Considering the health information needs in the Brazilian context, this work aims to characterize the Emphasis on Health Information offered by the Department of Social Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto for the Undergraduate Program in Information Science and Documentation of the University of São Paulo, campus of Ribeirao Preto (SP), Brazil. We chose a case study, focusing on a qualitative and exploratory approach comprehending analysis of documents and use of questionnaire. The information professional knowledgeable of the health informational problem is a potential problem solver and may take cooperative position in the multidisciplinary team of health, supporting the information management for decision-making, research, assistance, and promotion of health.
